One of the differences is that it is not saucy in texture. It really is a paste inconsistency and not oily either. Its making it difficult to convert recipes.

Hi there, we haven’t tried that brand or seen it, but after digging into it, it seems you aren’t the only one who’s lamenting the loss of this brand and chili sauce! Not having tried this particular sauce, it’s hard to recommend a substitute, but perhaps a chiu chow chili garlic sauce could do the trick? Lee Kum Kee makes one, or you could try our homemade version: https://thewoksoflife.com/homemade-chiu-chow-sauce/.

I am nearing the end of my hoard and have discovered that it is no longer available. Do you have any suggestions for a good substitute?

Hi Fred, the correct spelling is doubanjiang, sometimes called spicy bean paste, and is made with broad beans and chili peppers, and you can find the ingredient in our post on doubanjiang. Lee Kum Kee also makes a spicy bean paste which may be easier to find, though we generally recommend pixian doubanjiang from Sichuan province if you can find it!.

I have gochujang in my fridge to use with the spicy dishes. But gochujang is a Korean chili paste, right? What about “dobchujang” (sorry about the spelling). Isn’t that the Chinese equivalent of gochujang? But it is not mentioned in your list of ingredients. Is that because it is impossible to find? I tried my local Asian market and they didn’t have it. Then I went to the Asian Supermarket in Worcester, MA. I’ve been wanting to go there for years and finally got my chance. Did they have “dobchujang”? Nope. They were as big as a WalMart and didn’t have it. They had 40 different kinds of dumplings, live crabs, cuttlefish, longhorn peppers, and other interesting things, though. They were my last hope in finding this mysterious ingredient in my area (Central Massachusetts) . What would you recommend I do to get the “dobchujang” ingredient. On line? Where would you recommend?

Hi John, I have seen and had this before with alternating chicken and ham slices, but I have not seen this dish in restaurants for years.
